Shiva Nataraj or Dancing Shiva is a great symbol for Self. Of course there are wonderful interpretations of many aspects of the image. The drum of creation in one hand and the fire of destruction in another embody the power of our true nature.

Let’s specifically consider the "dwarf" which Shiva is dancing on top of.

The dwarf can be seen as ego or mind. When we are established in pure presence the mind becomes subservient. The mind is in awe. The mind cannot begin to imagine the greatness of pure being.

When we let go, and when we are still, the power of pure presence overwhelms the mind. So when we see Shiva Nataraj, it can act as a reminder of the natural relationship between mind and pure consciousness. When the mind is allowed to rest, and when pure being is allowed to shine forth, the mind simply lies down and surrenders, basking in the infinite emanation of pure being.
