Sri H.W.L. Poonja, lovingly referred to as Papaji, was born on October 13, 1910, in a part of the
Punjab that is now in Pakistan.
He had his first direct experience of the Self at the age of nine.
He grew up in love with Krishna, playing with Krishna and having many visions of Krishna.
Being dissatisfied with the temporary union with God he searched throughout India for guidance on how to always be connected to God. His search ended without success.
However, once back home he asked a sadhu if he knew somebody who could help Papaji be constantly connected to God. The sadhu recommended Sri Ramana Maharshi.
As soon as possible, Papaji traveled to Tiruvannamalai to be with Ramana.

It was during Papaji's second meeting with Ramana that Papaji heard the words that would end his search. Ramana asked Papaji what he had been doing. Papaji replied that he had been playing with Krishna on the other side of the mountain. Ramana asked if Krishna was here now. Papaji said no. Ramana then pointed out that Gods appear and disappear, and only the One who is aware of the Gods is constant. Ramana asked Papaji to find out who the seer is. Eventually Papaji saw without a doubt his true nature.
Despite his longing to stay with Ramana, Papaji left Tiruvannamalai during the partition of India to bring his family to Lucknow, India. He continued to work and support his extended family until his retirement in 1966.
Papaji also began meeting with seekers and having satsangs. He gained popularity as many would awaken to their true nature in his presence.
He passed away on September 6, 1997.
